A rainy Sunday made for a gruelling Monday for the Tecumseh Thunder.
Sunday’s rain backed up the schedule for the Ontario senior elimination baseball tournament. After playing four games in the first three days, the defending national champion Thunder were forced to play three games in less than eight hours on Monday in order to secure the club’s third straight provincial crown.
“It was a pretty big grind with the heat out there,” Thunder first baseman Mitch Delaney said. “We played a lot of tight games, but we’ve done the fundamentals pretty well.”
Tecumseh clinched the crown with a 4-2 win over the Strathroy Royals at Cullen Stadium. Strathroy’s only two losses in the double-knockout event came against the Thunder.
“At this point, it just come down to mental,” said Delaney, whose team was unbeaten in seven games. “We have a lot of good athletes on this team. We knew what we were getting into championship Monday and we couldn’t fail.”
Pitching was huge for the Thunder, who allowed just nine runs in seven tournament games with the team not allowing the opposition more than two runs in a single game.
Right-hander Joel Pierce earned his second tournament win in Monday’s final against Strathroy, which was making its first final appearance since 2012. Both of Pierce’s wins were complete games as Tecumseh starters went the distance in six of seven games.
Right-hander Chris Horvath also threw two complete-game victories. Right-hander Brandon Lindquist and left-hander Cody Seremack also had completegame wins while right-hander Eric Carducci got relief help from Jesse Carriere for the other win.
“We had some great pitching and timely hitting,” Delaney said. “We had our horse on the mound (Monday) in Piercy and a couple of the bats came through and we had a big win.”
Strathroy got on the board in the top of the first inning, but Tecumseh got two back in the bottom of the inning. Tecumseh loaded the bases to start the game, but a double-play left the club without a run and two men on with two outs. First-year senior Keifer Quick delivered a two-run single to put the Thunder up for good.
“You have to piece anything and it worked out,” Quick said.
Delaney’s solo homer made it 3-1 after three innings, but the Royals drew to within 3-2 in the fourth inning before a hit batter and walk set the stage for a two-out RBI single by Delaney to make it 4-2 in the bottom of the fourth inning.
“Throughout the whole tournament, we kind of had timely hitting,” Delaney said. “We’d get some runners on and we’d hold off a little bit, but today we finally came through with those big hits.”
Ontario was just awarded a second entry to the national championship in Fredericton, N.B., but Thunder manager Jamie Kell didn’t tell his team that before Monday’s game.
“I didn’t let the guys know,” Kell said. “My team didn’t know because it’s 50-50 if you go (because of the costs) if you don’t get the money from the OBA (Ontario Baseball Association).”
Going as the provincial champion is worth thousands to the winner and also gives the club first option for pickups for the tournament, which is set for Aug. 25-29.
“To tell you the truth, we didn’t really know how it would go winning or losing, but our main mindset was to win, so we came through in the end,” Delaney said.

Is redemption also a dish best served cold?
Whatever the case, the Tecumseh Thunder know this much for certain – it’s delectable.
A 4-1 verdict over Quebec in Sunday’s gold-medal game of the Baseball Canada senior men’s championship in Chatham, N.B., made up for the heartbreak of a year ago, when Tecumseh came up short in the title game.
“We had that taste of silver all year,” Tecumseh coach Jamie Kell said. “Right from our winter workouts that was the talk.
“We tried to build the team around our experience of last year. Even the team that we had – which was a great team – we still we needed a few pieces.”
After the final out was made, jubilant Thunder players opted to partake in an impromptu game of pile on in the middle of the infield, a couple of Tecumseh players racing from the dugout to spray the excited group with celebratory champagne.
It was the complete opposite of the emotions on display one year earlier, when backed by the two-hit, 13-strikeout pitching of left-hander Shane Kraemer, the Langley, B.C. Blaze blanked the Thunder 3-0 in the gold-medal game in St. John’s, Nfld.
This year’s final result also avenged Tecumseh’s only setback of the event. Quebec blanked Tecumseh 1-0 in the tournament opener for both clubs.
With the national title again on the line, this time, the Thunder was not going to be denied.
Tecumseh started quickly, catcher Eric Cunningham scoring in the first inning on a wild pitch by Quebec starter Francois Lafreniere. Mitch Delaney’s single scored Paul Lamantia in the fourth to make it 2-0 and the Thunder added two more runs in the fifth when Lamantia’s single scored Kevin Mailloux and Sean Bignall came home on another Lafreniere wild pitch.
After being blanked in the opener, Tecumseh scored 42 runs in the next five games.
“With the experience of last year, we knew we couldn’t let the bats go silent at all,” Kell said.
Joel Pierce got the win, allowing just two hits and one run over 5 2/3 innings of work. Rob Nixon came on in relief to earn the save.
“We knew Pierce could handle it,” Kell said. “He’s a big-game pitcher. He wanted the ball.”
Earlier Sunday, the Thunder was 12 outs away from elimination. Down 1-0 entering the bottom of the fourth inning, Tecumseh exploded for 12 runs over the next three innings to rout Fredericton, N.B., 12-2 in the semi-finals and advance to the gold-medal game.
Lamantia, who was named the tournament’s top hitter, batting .421, paced the rally, scoring three times and driving in five runs, including a grand slam. Delaney, who had such a successful tournament that he was twice named to the all-star team — at first base and designated hitter — added three hits and two RBIs, as did Ryan Kerstens. Thunder shortstop Brandon Gignac was also named to the all-tournament team.
Tecumseh advanced to the semi-finals with a 17-5 win over Saskatchewan and a 4-1 triumph over the host team Saturday.

Back-to-Back Provincial Titles
The Tecumseh Thunder repeated as Ontario champions, beating the Mississauga SW Twins 4-0 in the finals. The final matchup was the third straight season these powerhouse teams have met in the finals. Mississauga won it in 2013, and the Thunder have won the last two years.
The Thunder beat Sarnia 6-0 (WP- Tyler Gauthier), then easily handled Pickering 4-0 in round two (WP- Tylr Lawrence). In round three, they met the same Mississauga SW team, and blew a last-inning lead, losing 7-6 (LP- Jesse Carriere). With their backs against the wall the rest of the way, Tecumseh beat Strathroy 4-1 (WP- Brandon Lindquist), before beating Etobicoke 6-3 (WP- Joel Pierce) in the final five. On Monday morning, they won a wild game against rivals Windsor. Trailing 3-0 late, the Thunder scored a run in the sixth, and then three more in their last at-bats, to stun the Stars 4-3. The win set the stage for the final victory against the Twins.
It's too bad Ontario isn't awarded two berths in the nationals this year, because the Mississauga juggernaut is well-deserving of a spot there. They had been to the nationals three of the last four seasons. Something tells me they'll be back again. Congratulations also goes out to the Etobicoke Rangers and Windsor Stars, for coming a game away from the finals. The Niagara Metros should also be commended for anothet deep run, as they fell just short of the semi-finals.

The Tecumseh Thunder 'AAA' Senior Baseball Team completed their season with a 27-9 record and with a 15 game winning streak going into the Ontario Senior Elimination Tournament August 1st - 4th
The Thunder earned their 1st regular season title since 2007 with the wining streak that has spanned 15 Games starting back on July 2nd and continuing with a Sweep of the Can-Am Playoffs on July 27th.
